Gregg Allman and Mavis Staples to salute Dr. John at tribute show

Musicians Gregg Allman, The Blind Boys Of Alabama, Mavis Staples and Allen Toussaint are among the stars lining up to pay tribute to legendary blues rocker Dr. John at a special concert in his native New Orleans, Louisiana. Singers Lucinda Williams, Ryan Bingham, George Porter, Jr., Cyril Neville and rockers Widespread Panic have also signed up for the gig, titled The Musical Mojo of Dr. John: A Celebration of Mac & His Music, at the Saenger Theatre on 3 May (14).
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, 73, will also grace the stage for one-off collaborations with his celebrity guests throughout the show, with other artists set to be announced in the coming weeks.
Grammy-winning record producer Don Was will serve as the night’s musical director and lead an all-star house band.
Was says, “Dr. John transcends genres with a truly distinctive sound that embodies the rich musical heritage of New Orleans and has tremendously influenced the course of music history.”
Executive producer Keith Wortman adds, “It’s an honour to be producing this extraordinary concert event honouring the legendary Dr. John. It is even more special to be doing it with this line-up of artists in the city that has been such an integral part of his life and music.”
