Biography

An intense and gifted African-American actor with chiseled good looks, Isaiah Washington forged a successful career in film and television before hitting it big as Dr. Preston Burke on the ABC medical drama, "Grey's Anatomy" (ABC, 2005- ). Honing his dramatic skills on the New York stage, Washington went on to work in more than 30 films, including Spike Lee's "Clockers" (1995) and "Get on the Bus" (1996), and clocked in as guest star on a number of television series. Though reports surfaced in 2006 that Washington's on-set antics had caused conflict, both on the set of "Grey's" and on other projects as well, no one could deny the dedication he had shown his craft.

.

In October 2006, news reports surfaced that Washington had grabbed "Grey's Anatomy" co-star Patrick Dempsey by the throat. Several websites reported that Washington also made a homophobic slur against gay castmate T.R. Knight. Shortly after the details of the argument were made public, Knight made a public disclosure that he is gay. Both Washington and creator Shonda Rhimes have played down the incident to the press

.

Controversy once again erupted surrounding the cast of "Grey’s Anatomy" at the Golden Globes on January 15, 2007. After the show won Best Drama, the cast was backstage answering questions and Washington replied to press queries about the October 2006 incident saying: "No, I did not call T.R. a 'faggot. It never happened." After the statement by Washington, tension among cast members was apparent. The following day, T.R. Knight appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and said that Washington had indeed used the F word. Several days after the Globes, Washington apologized publicly for using the word.
