James Guy was born on Nov. 26, 1995, in Bury, Greater Manchester, England. Guy began swimming competitively on a national level at age 19, when he participated in the 2014 Commonwealth Games on behalf of England; he won a gold medal in the 4 x 100-meter medley relay, and a bronze medal in the 400-meter freestyle. That same year, Guy took the silver medal in the 400-meter freestyle at the 2014 FINA World Swimming Championships; at this event, he competed on behalf of Great Britain on the whole. The following year, Guy won two gold medals at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships-one for the 200-meter freestyle and one for the 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay-and one silver medal, for the 400-meter freestyle. In 2016, James Guy set out to qualify for the United Kingdom's swimming team for the 2016 Summer Olympics at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
