Jane Fonda & Sam Waterston arrested during Capitol rally

Jane Fonda has been arrested again for demonstrating outside the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.

A week after she was handcuffed and taken into custody for participating in an illegal environmental demonstration, the actress was arrested with her Grace and Frankie co-star Sam Waterston.

The actors were joined by 14 fellow activists who blocked First Street in the city as part of a rally dubbed Fire Drill Fridays. The weekly protests will continue until political leaders agree to take immediate action on the environment.

Fonda has pledged to take part in 14 Fire Drill Fridays, after becoming inspired to protest for a Green New Deal by 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg.

A press release about the movement Fonda has launched reads: “(We want to) to address the climate crisis we now face. A Green New Deal would make the investments in communities, public infrastructure and private industry to provide clean energy and create millions of high-wage jobs, while protecting the workers and communities affected by this economic transition.

“It is the pathway to transform our economy responsibly and inclusively from unsustainable fossil fuel dependence to clean, renewable resources.

“The Green New Deal is bold, expensive and far-reaching because we have to not only end our dependence on fossil fuel but on the exploitative, extractive mindset that has brought us to this point of unsustainable inequality. It’s not just nature that’s being destroyed, it’s our Democracy and the two crises are interconnected. One will not be solved without the other.”

Waterston and Fonda were joined by author and historian Ibram X. Kendi, indigenous activist Jasilyn Charger, and Greenpeace campaigner Charlie Jiang at the second Fire Drill Friday protest.

Last week (October 11, 2019), the Barbarella star was arrested with a 15 fellow activists, who were charged with crowding, obstructing or incommoding. They were processed and released.
