Jared Harris filmed The Terror with broken ribs

British actor Jared Harris completed filming on new TV drama series The Terror while struggling with the pain of broken ribs.
The Mad Men star portrays Royal Navy Captain Francis Crozier in the real-life maritime mystery, based on the true story of the Franklin Expedition, an 1845 adventure to find the treacherous Northwest Passage trade route through the Arctic Ocean.
The voyage turned into a battle of survival, and Harris found himself facing his own issues as he shot various stunts depicting the crew’s treacherous final days on location in Croatia.
Confessing the injury was due to his own “extracurricular activities” he told TV show New York Live, “I broke my ribs at some point during it (filming), but you know, you have to carry on, and it was right towards the end so there were lots of stunts and stuff like that.”
To make the boat scenes more realistic, the cast and crew filmed on a tilted stage, but that was only part of the physical battle Harris and his co-stars faced, revealing they really swore like sailors as they tried to get used to the low ceilings and doorways.
“Most of the injuries came from, because the decks are quite small, so we all hadn’t figured out yet, you have to, out of habit, keep ducking your head the whole time (through doorways), and the curses that were going on…!” he laughed. “For the first two weeks, everyone was smacking their heads against the door frames!”
The Terror is adapted from the best-selling 2007 book of the same name by Dan Simmons, and co-stars Ciaran Hinds as famed explorer, Captain Sir John Franklin.
