Jessica Simpson Files for Divorce

Jessica Simpson eliminated the chance of an immediate reunion with Nick Lachey when she filed for divorce Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court. She cited irreconcilable differences in the filing, confirmed by her publicist, Rob Shuter.

The couple announced their separation on Nov. 23, after months of intense speculation from tabloids.

Upon entering the union in October 2002, Lachey, 32, was the bigger earner of the two and arguably the bigger star. But since that time, Simpson has gone from a middling pop star to an A-list megastar, earning $30 million last year alone.

The pair shot to fame after starring together in MTV’s hit reality show Newlyweds, a show which seemed to pay dividends for Simpson while Lachey’s career saw no great rewards as a result.

Earlier this year, Simpson, 25, made her big-screen debut, playing Daisy Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard. She also lent her name to a line of cosmetics and fragrances and released both a solo and Christmas album in 2004.

Lachey’s most recent ventures included the release of his 2003 solo album, SoulO, and a string of appearances on the WB’s TV show Charmed. He’s set to reunite with the TV network next year when he stars in a pilot about a newly single bachelor.
