Jimmy Buffett demands more cash from Spotify

Singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett has asked the CEO of music streaming site Spotify when artists will begin to receive decent wages from the service. The Margaritaville hitmaker stood up from the audience during a question-and-answer session in San Francisco, California on Wednesday (08Oct14) to aim his concern at founder Daniel Ek, who was sat onstage following a panel discussion.
Buffett asked when musicians can expect to earn more from their tracks being streamed on the site, which has become an increasingly popular way to listen to music in recent years.
He asked, “Do you see anything in your future where we might get a raise directly from you as opposed to the bulls**t you have to go through to deal with a label these days?”
He added that musicians receive only a “trickle” of their earnings from Spotify once it has gone through record label executives, and following laughs from onlookers, Ek replied, “I agree obviously” before reeling off a list of facts and figures regarding revenue issues.
The session was held as part of Vanity Fair magazine’s inaugural New Establishment Summit.
