John Michael McDonagh
Second film, "Calvary"
Writes and directs "The Guard"
Left school at 16 and lived on unemployment while writing a succession of unpublished novels.
Raised with his brother in the London suburb of Camberwell.
Never felt jealous of his brother's success in the theater, as he professed no interest in the medium. McDonagh was initially frustrated when Martin scored a huge international hit with "In Bruges," but the feelings were quelled by the massive box office returns for "The Guard," which topped "Bridesmaids" on the Irish box office chart.
