It’s been a rough few months for fans of AMC’s Mad Men as the uncertainty of the show’s future continues (and if you can’t count yourself amongst the fans then this could be good news because at least you’ll have some time to catch up on the last four seasons). The show originally got the go-ahead for a new season from the folks at AMC, but then we found out that none of the people who pay for, write for, or create the show had deals to move season five forward. Well, shit. Now we’re just stuck in limbo while AMC and Lionsgate figure out the money situation so they can move forward and ensure that creator and writer Matthew Weiner and cast members John Slattery, Christina Hendricks, January Jones and Jon Hamm can all get back to work on the fantastic show. You’d think with a show that pulls in such ratings for AMC and garners fist-fulls of Emmys would be pushed to the front of the priority list so that more episodes could make it to the screen faster, but that’s not the case here. Grr. While many of us may be pulling our hair out with all this worrying, Slattery (a.k.a. Roger Sterling) assures us that it’s just a matter of time.
In an interview with MTV News he said, “You know, it is a little ridiculous,” adding that AMC needs to “figure out how to pay for all of it, but it’ll come back. I don’t know when, to be honest with you. I was just with those guys and I don’t think anybody knows when.” So there you have it: a little dose of hope with a giant serving of infinite time stretching before us. It’s comforting to know that people whose paychecks come from the show are so calm about this, but I’m not as at ease. I know patience is a virtue, but it’s one I don’t possess. I can barely stand waiting the week between Mad Men episodes when the season is in full swing, let alone bear this chasm of indefinite time between us and season five. It’s going to be a tough couple of months; good thing Don Draper taught us all how to drink scotch on the rocks.
