What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is easily one of Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio‘s greatest films. Both actors have done extreme things in order to get into character, and both men have worked in insane environments for the various roles that they’ve had. However, Johnny Depp recently admitted that while filming What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, he was really horrible to Leonardo DiCaprio. While attending the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Depp recently told People Magazine, “It was a hard time for me, that film, for some reason. I don’t know why… I tortured him. I really did. He was always talking about these videos games, you know? I told you it was kind of a dark period. ‘No, I will not give you a drag of my cigarette while you hide from your mother again, Leo.”

Though Johnny Depp did not go into detail as to why he was so horrible to DiCaprio, it seems that he might have just been extremely annoyed by the then 19-year-old actor. Apparently, DiCaprio was very eager and asked tons of questions. Still, Depp said he always admired Leo’s worth ethic. He told People, “I’d say the absolute truth is that I respect Leo a lot. He worked really hard on that film and spent a lot of time researching. He came to set and he was ready to work hard and all his ducks were in a row.”

Depp is obviously apologetic for his treatment of the Academy Award nominee, and quite frankly we don’t think DiCaprio is fazed by anything that happened way back in 1993. The thespian has gone on to do incredible work in films like The Aviator, The Wolf of Wall Street, Titanic and so many more. Who knows, perhaps DiCaprio will finally snag the Oscar this year for his role in Alejandro González Iñárritus The Revenant.
