The fantasy film has already recouped the $200 million (£125 million) Disney bosses spent on it – in just three days.
The movie has picked up a staggering $210.3 million (£131.4 million) globally since its release on Friday (05Mar10), scoring the biggest 3-D opening ever and the biggest-ever opening in the first quarter of the year.
The film opened in America with an estimated $116.3 million (£72.7 million), easily beating the winter record set by The Passion of the Christ in 2004.
Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke’s new cop drama Brooklyn’s Finest opens in second place with $13.5 million (GBP8.4 million), while former box office number one Shutter Island falls to three with a $13.3 million (GBP8.3 million) weekend.
Cop Out and Avatar round out the new top five.
