Leading figure of the Finnish cinema ever since the release of his first feature as a director, "A Sunday in September" (1963). Donner's films range from documentaries to melodramas with, for the most part, his more "serious" work being made in Sweden and his more "commercial" work in Finland. He is also the author of "The Personal Vision of Ingmar Bergman" (1964) as well as numerous novels and political works. Donner was made managing director of the Swedish Film Institute in 1978 and is a member of the Finnish parliament. Married to Harriet Andersson, who has appeared in a number of his films.
