Filmmaker Joseph Kosinski has emerged as a frontrunner to direct Tom Cruise in a planned Top Gun sequel.

The action man is currently busy promoting his new The Mummy revamp, but he is already gearing up to return to the big screen as ace pilot Maverick in a follow-up to his hit 1986 film.

Talking on Australia’s Sunrise morning show this week (begs22May17), Cruise said, “I’m going to start filming it probably in the next year. It’s happening. It is definitely happening.”

Now sources tell Variety.com Kosinski is currently leading the pack of prospective directors to take charge of the long-awaited project, which would reunite him with Tom following 2013’s sci-fi action epic Oblivion.

Kosinski has already met with Paramount Pictures bosses and an offer to board Top Gun 2 is imminent, according to the outlet.

Representatives for Paramount have yet to comment on the report.
