Judy Greer has a stunning 83 credits on her IMDb page — and while her attempts at leading lady status (TV’s Miss Guided) didn’t quite take, she’s about as famous as one can get for being every rom-com heroine’s best friend. (She sidekicked like a pro in 13 Going on 30 and 27 Dresses, and also, it should be noted, played “Erin the File Girl” in What Women Want back when Mel Gibson seemed like an appropriate rom-com leading man.) Now, at last, she has a gig that will allow her to take on a true starring role: She’s signed a massive book deal for a Bossypants-ish essay collection called I Don’t Know What You Know Me From: Confessions of a Co-Star.

Doubleday will publish the book next year, and The Hollywood Reporter says the deal netted her nearly a million bucks. Please note: Most author advances are significantly less than a million bucks.
Love seeing Greer get what she deserves. Her supporting roles are often the bright spot in the otherwise standard, silly romantic comedies of the last decade. And there’s nothing wrong with embracing what has clearly become a lucrative niche for her; doing so signifies a kind of cool confidence. With essay titles such as “Celebrities I’ve Peed Next To” and “I’m Not America’s Sweetheart, I’m America’s Best Friend,” she seems to be setting herself up as a softer, nicer version of Kathy Griffin. And you have to admit, being Kathy Griffin seems more fun than being Katherine Heigl.

Greer said in a statement: “This is who I am. This is what I think about things. This is stuff that happened to me, that could have just as easily have happened to you. I think I am really lucky to be where I am in life, but I’ve never really lost that feeling that I don’t fit in, and if you have, will you please email me and tell me how you did it? I’m serious.” I hope she never does, honestly, if that’s what fuels her humor — I can think of no one better to join Tina Fey, Mindy Kaling, Amy Poehler, and Lena Dunham in the explosion of funny-lady books.
