K.J. Apa has had struggles with his body image since finding fame in Hollywood.
The actor has risen to prominence since landing the role of Archie Andrews in CW drama series Riverdale and has also appeared in films such as A Dog’s Purpose and The Hate U Give.
However, in a new interview with ASOS Magazine, Apa opened up about some of the difficulties he has faced of late, especially in relation to his appearance.
“As soon as I started being on camera, I became self-conscious, which I never was (before),” he admitted in the chat. “Now I look in the mirror and feel unhappy.”
Apa went on to discuss the effect that the hit show’s popularity has had on his self-esteem, remarking that the attention sometimes makes him “uncomfortable”. He noted that it can be awkward when fans approach him in public, and also revealed that he sometimes finds it hard to distance himself from his on-screen persona.
“The fact I have to look a certain way for the show, that can be pressuring,” the 21-year-old sighed, before reflecting that “there are positives” to his fame. “I’ve found my own style when it comes to fashion. I love monochromatic colours, being in one colour.”
Despite finding aspects of his work challenging, the New Zealand-born star commented that he is more aware of the burdens that he puts on himself and is now looking to focus on finding more balance in the future.
“Recently, it’s been realising, ‘What do I want as a 21-year-old in life?’ It’s super important to write down what you want your life to look like in five years,” he added.
