Just how long was Katie Holmes unhappy before she finally filed for divorce from Tom Cruise? At least six weeks, because that’s how long ago she gave an interview for the August issue of Elle magazine which seems to have hinted toward the marriage’s impending end. Case in point: whenever Holmes was asked about her husband, she deflected the question by relating it back to herself.
“He has been Tom Cruise for 30 years,” Holmes told Elle, “I know who I am and where I am and where I want to go, so I want to focus on that.” Having had her own foray back into the big time (including the miniseries The Kennedys and an upcoming modern version of Anton Chekhov’s play The Seagull), the star wanted to make it clear that being identified as Tom Cruise’s wife has not made her career any easier. “Things are not handed to anyone,” she says, adding, “If anything, you work a little bit harder when you’re in such visible circumstances.”
Holmes, who married Cruise at age 27, says that she feels much more confident about herself and her career than she did just six years ago, when she got married. “I definitely feel much more comfortable in my own skin,” Holmes notes about entering her 30s, “I feel sexier. I think in my 20s, it’s like you’re trying too hard to figure everything out.”
