Japanese director Kazuyoshi Kumakiri is celebrating after his new movie My Man was named Best Film at the Moscow International Film Festival on Saturday (28Jun14). The romantic drama became the first Japanese release to take the title in 15 years; Kaneto Shindo’s Will to Live last won in 1999.
Thor’s Tadanobu Asano also claimed Best Actor for his portrayal of a man who falls in love with a girl he adopts after she becomes an orphan following the tsunami that struck the Japanese island of Hokkaido in 1993. The story is based on the novel by Kazuki Sakuraba.
Asano’s victory at the Russian event came 31 years after fellow countryman Yoshi Kato landed the same prize for his role in Hometown in 1959.
