Let’s not get it twisted — it sucks to lose. Kerry Washington was a Lead Actress in a Drama nominee for the 2013 Emmy Awards, but she went home empty-handed. Although she has many fans, we all knew that the Scandal actress was up against some fierce competition: Elisabeth Moss for Mad Men, Michelle Dockery for Downton Abbey, and Claire Danes who went on to win the Emmy for her role in Homeland. If you gotta lose an Emmy, these are probably the ladies to whom you want to lose. So in our world, Kerry is still, absolutely, without a doubt, still winning. Here are a few reasons why.
The Emmy Nomination Itself Was Historical
This year Kerry became the first black actress to be nominated for Lead Actress In A Drama Series since Cicely Tyson was nominated in 1995. Because this was such a big historical moment, she was also asked to present an award with Diahann Carroll — another trailblazer for African-American women in television.
She’s Still Married To The Sweetest Guy Ever
Kerry eloped earlier this year to a man we didn’t even know she was dating — it was epic. And the more we find out about NFL star Nnamdi Asomugha, the more we like. He’s big on charity work, everyone around him seems to love him, and he’s super cute. ‘Nuff said.
Duh, Scandal!
One of the most addictive shows to ever exist is coming back to television for its highly-anticipated third season. Fans of the show will see a whole new version of Kerry Washington’s beloved character Olivia Pope, because we’re about to meet — wait for it — her dad. As her character gets a little more depth, we expect that another Emmy nomination (and a first win) is definitely on the horizon.
