Lainie Kazan gets plea deal in shoplifting case

Actress Lainie Kazan has reportedly landed a plea deal in her shoplifting case.
The My Big Fat Greek Wedding star was shopping at a Gelson’s grocery store in the San Fernando Valley on Christmas Eve (24Dec17), when she allegedly walked out with $180 (£133) worth of groceries without paying.
According to TMZ, after police were called to the shop, Kazan claimed she didn’t pay because she didn’t have money on her. She was subsequently arrested for petty theft and cited, before being released without bail.
Now, the gossip website reports she has cut a plea deal with the court, which will see her attend a support group.
The Los Angeles City Attorney told TMZ that Kazan has accepted an offer to participate in the Neighborhood Justice Program, where attendees discuss their crimes and take responsibility, instead of going to court or pleading guilty.
If Kazan completes the program, criminal charges will not be filed.
Despite the grocery store alleging the actress had stolen from them before, her lawyer insists she was not trying to shoplift and was always planning to pay for her items.
“Lainie is not a shoplifter. Nor has she ever left a Gelson’s store without paying for her groceries,” Mark Werksman told E! News after her arrest in December (17). “This was a misunderstanding by Gelson’s employees who did not give her a chance to pay for her groceries before detaining her. We look forward to resolving these charges in court where we are confident she will be exonerated.”
