LOOK: Chris Hemsworth’s Weight Loss For ‘In the Heart Of the Sea’ Is Insane

We’re all used to seeing Chris Hemsworth as the mega hunk Thor. The 6 foot 3 inch actor’s large frame is usually perfectly crafted and bulked up with his rock hard abs and muscles. However, for his upcoming role as a 19th century sailor in In the Heart of the Sea, Hemsworth had to slim down dramatically. Though he was already considerably lighter than his superhero weight as a result of his role in the thriller Black Hat, Hemsworth still needed to lose an additional 15 pounds for In the Heart of the Sea. The Australian hottie took to Twitter saying, “Just tried a new diet/training program called “Lost At Sea”. Wouldn’t recommend it.”

Hemsworth and his castmates had to restrict their diets to an ungodly 500 calories a day, while maintaining a rigorous work out every day.  Director Ron Howard told Entertainment Weekly, “Because they had to lose the weight pretty fast and they had to lose it safely. They needed to keep burning the calories and we also needed that sinewy strength that was more of that era, as opposed to a kind of cut, buff look.”

Hemsworth certainly looked like his character, real life sailor Owen Chase, who was stranded at sea after a whale destroyed his ship. Check out his terrifying transformation on the flip:
