“Red Planet” Premiere

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 7, 2000 — Being stranded on the planet Mars with the likes of Val Kilmer, Benjamin Bratt and Aussie’s newest export, Simon Baker, is not a bad idea. But for now, being marooned on a red carpet with the cast at “Red Planet‘s” world premiere will have to do.

Superstar couple Bratt and Julia Roberts unlocked for a moment to agree that the whole “no gravity” concept would keep them firmly planted on earth.

“It gets very complicated to be in space with a group of six or seven guys. All that testosterone bouncing around … throwing in a woman could really complicate things,” said Bratt.

But “Red Planet” is no boys’ club. Director Anthony Hoffman appointed Carrie-Anne Moss (“The Matrix”) head commander.

“The whole idea of having Carrie-Anne Moss as the crew leader was a great idea. It gives audiences the whole idea that a woman being in a strong postion can also be nurturing and mothering,” said Baker.

In “Red Planet,” Mission Commander Kate Bowman (Moss) is the pilot of the mission to investigate what went wrong with the Mars Terraforming Project. However, a crash landing leaves them stranded on Mars without much hope for rescue. Bowman must defy orders from Houston, and save Kilmer, Sizemore, Bratt, Baker and Terence Stamp from the harsh elements and an exploration robot-turned-enemy.

“I wouldn’t mind if I got to live like my character. It’s exciting. Research shows that one of the hardest parts is what it does to the mind and body. A movie set would be good preparation,” said Kilmer.

On second thought, send us a postcard.

“Red Planet” hits theaters Nov. 10.
