The disgraced financier was sentenced to 150 years in jail in June (09) after he pleaded guilty to siphoning billions of dollars from his wealthy clients, including Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, John Malkovich and Zsa Zsa Gabor.
Reports circulated in August (09) that the 77 year old was dying of cancer – claims which were quickly refuted by America’s Prison Bureau.
However, Madoff was moved from his cell at North Carolina’s Butner prison on Friday (18Dec09). No specific reason was given for the transfer.
In a statement, chief public information officer Traci Billingsley says, “Madoff was moved within the complex from the medium (security facility) to the medical centre in Butner on December 18.
“The potential reasons for an inmate’s transfer are numerous and we don’t release those specific reasons.”
