Madonna Calls M.I.A.’s Super Bowl Middle Finger ‘Negative’ and ‘Irrelevant’

madonnaEarlier this week, M.I.A. sent media outlets into overdrive when she momentarily went rogue and whipped out her middle finger during Sunday’s Super Bowl halftime show. It was no Janet Jackson nip-slip, but it’s not exactly what you’d call family-friendly. Nevertheless, it became a pretty controversial matter and now the woman who was upstaged by the middle finger, Madonna, is finally speaking up and she’s none too pleased.

The pop superstar recently had a phone chat with E! NewsRyan Seacrest and wasted no time in expressing her surprise and annoyance with the British rapper’s finger malfunction. She said, “To tell you the truth, I didn’t even know about it. I didn’t know about it until I left. I found out about it in the elevator, actually,” adding, “I was really surprised. I didn’t know anything about it. I wasn’t happy about it. I understand it’s kind of punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy and positivity, it seemed negative.” And Seacrest seemed to agree, referring to it as a very “sneaky move.”

Not only that, but Madonna says she found the whole act pointless and juvenile, adding, “It’s one of those things, it’s such a teenager…in a way, kind of irrelevant kind of thing to do. There was such a feeling of love and unity there, what was the point? It was just out of place.” And she’s got a point. There really was no purpose in doing it besides from warranting an obscene amount of attention (and if that was M.I.A.’s plan all along then she’s a genius). It’s hard to blame Madonna for being irritated about it. This was supposed to be her big moment, but everyone’s just focusing on one small hand gesture. M.I.A.’s stunt didn’t just rain on Madonna’s parade…it poured.
