Mark Wahlberg Thought He Was Young Before Justin Bieber Came Around

Mark WahlbergTo most of the world, Mark Wahlberg is a young 40 years old. But in the acting community, that equates to about 63. Wahlberg was under the impression that he was still considered part of Hollywood’s youthful community—and rightfully so: many of us still bear the image of Marky Mark in mind when picturing the actor/producer (well…at least one of us does). Wahlberg was in for a rude awakening, however, during the casting of a developing basketball film, which will costar Wahlberg opposite the still-passably-young Justin Bieber.

When discussing the project with Wahlberg, Paramount Pictures made mention of casting “an old guy and a young guy.” Presuming he was being considered for the latter role, Wahlberg rattled off a list of actors with whom he’d like to work. Said Wahlberg to MTV, “I’m like, ‘Cool, let’s get Jack [Nicholson]. Let’s get Robert De Niro. Let’s get Robert Duvall.'” The studio gave him a shock when they mentioned Garrett Hedlund as Wahlberg’s opposite, sparking the realization that he himself was being cast as the “old guy” (a role Wahlberg is comparing to Paul Newman’s character in The Color of Money). The “young guy” role eventually went to Justin Bieber.

Wahlberg has expressed a great deal of excitement over working with Bieber. “I’m pretty intuitive…I see the guy and spent time with him, and you see what he does and how he does it, and then you actually have a conversation with him, and it’s there…and if not, I will extract it.” Looks like the old guy and the young guy are taking too each other pretty quickly in this story.
