Mary Mary join Stevie Wonder’s boycott of Florida

Gospel singers Mary Mary are following Stevie Wonder’s lead and boycotting Florida until a controversial self-defence law is overturned following the murder of local teen Trayvon Martin. Neighbourhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman was found not guilty of murder and manslaughter charges by a Florida jury on 13 July (13) after claiming he shot the unarmed 17 year old in self-defence in February, 2012.
His acquittal caused renewed scrutiny of the state’s Stand Your Ground law, which allows a person to use reasonable force to defend themselves if they feel their safety is threatened, and Wonder voiced his disapproval by announcing his decision to never perform in the area until the legislation is abolished.
Now Grammy-winning duo Mary Mary has agreed to do the same – in a post on Twitter.com, the singers write, “We will Stand with Stevie Wonder & Boycott Florida until the Stand Your Ground Law is changed! We love our fans but we MUST do something!! We understand a No from us isn’t as big as a No from Stevie Wonder but if all our voices join together we can REALLY change things! Lets (sic) let our voices be heard JusticeForTrayvonMartin”.
Zimmerman’s acquittal has sparked mass protests across America, with a number of stars including Beyonce, Rihanna, Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus all speaking out against the verdict.
