Tyler Perry’s ‘Meet the Browns’ Gets TV Spinoff

In his quest to conquer every single entertainment medium, Tyler Perry is set to bring a sitcom based on his movie Meet the Browns to TV.

Perry is already the chief creative force behind TBS’ Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, cable TV’s highest-rated original sitcom of all time. He serves as the hugely popular series’ director and executive producer, as well as occasionally writing and appearing in episodes.

The actor/screenwriter/director/producer/playwright/author will contribute in the same capacity for the same network when Meet the Browns premieres in January 2009.

Actor David Mann will reprise his role as Leroy Brown, who was a supporting character in the movie version earlier this year. The TV series kicks off with Leroy inheriting a decrepit, old house from his late father.

Tyler Perry is an extraordinary talent who has turned House of Payne into a record-breaking hit,” said Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks. “We’re thrilled at having the chance to repeat that success with Leroy Brown, a character already proven to be a big hit with audiences.”

Meet the Browns, released in March, earned just under $42 million at the box office. Perry’s upcoming films include September’s The Family That Preys and next February’s Madea Goes to Jail, which will see Perry reprise the role of his most beloved character, Madea.
