Michael Mann and Paul Haggis Will Bring Us ‘Gold’

Michael MannBritish filmmaker Michael Mann looks to bring some respect to the realm of treasure hunt movies with his latest project, Gold. Dubbed a “contemporary thriller in the vein of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre” (a 1948 film starring Humphrey Bogart), Gold follows a group in search of the precious ore.

Originally, Paul Haggis was eying the prospectors’ tale as his next directing project, but it seems that his other ambitions are making his schedule a little too tight. Hence, Haggis stepped back and took the producers’ role while enticing Mann with the script from Patrick Masset and John Zinman (The Chicago Code, Friday Night Lights). Mann nabbed the project under his own banner, allowing for him to take the director’s chair, though Haggis and Michael Nozick are helping on the producing end.

It’s still in early development and Mann plans to fully flesh out the project before involving a studio or naming any actors, but this looks like it could be a great film. We’re just about due for a modern, treasure-bound adventure that doesn’t involve Matthew McConoughey and his ever-disappearing shirts or Nicholas Cage and precious American relics. We know Mann from many of his gangster-heavy films, but he’s a great pick for the man to revive the modern adventure thriller.
