Michelle Yeoh celebrates Earth Day with charity bracelet launch

Actress Michelle Yeoh marked Earth Day on Monday (22Apr19) by launching a new eco-friendly bracelet for charity.
The Crazy Rich Asians star, a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), has unveiled the #TOGETHERBAND Life on Land bracelet, the first in a series of 17 sustainable accessories to raise awareness about eco-friendly fashion.
The bands were made by designers at British brand Bottletop, with each new colour, set to drop monthly, promoting a different environmental cause so fashion-forward activists can show their support to sustainability goals close to their hearts.
“It’s about taking urgent action to prevent deforestation and reduce the loss of natural habitats and biodiversity, which are a part of our common heritage and are critical for our future,” Michelle explained to The Hollywood Reporter of the Life on Land bracelet, which is crafted by women saved from human trafficking and made from materials such as recovered ocean plastic and metal melted down from illegal firearms.
“Seriously, because they are made from special material, which otherwise would be really detrimental to our oceans, to our land,” she shared. “We are helping to make a difference.”
Working with officials at the U.N. has made the 56 year old more aware of the impact her own fashion choices will have on Earth, and as a result, her clothing preferences have changed.
“Eco-consciousness and fashion are subjects close to my heart, and in fact I have recently – with UNDP – explored how the marriage of sustainability and fashion can lead to better outcomes for our planet,” she said.
And Michelle insists going green doesn’t mean having to sacrifice style: “I’ve even had a bespoke dress made from a fashion house in Italy (Tiziano Guardini) that specialises in smart renewable production choices, lowering water and carbon output,” she added, “and the dress looked absolutely fantastic.”
