Naya Rivera might have played a bubbly cheerleader on Glee, but during the series, she was dealing with some pretty dark things. For the first time ever, Rivera opened up about the abortion she had while filming the critically acclaimed Fox series. In her soon-to-be-published memoir, Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes and Growing Up, the actress reveals that she got an abortion in 2010. She found out she was pregnant a couple of weeks after breaking up with fellow actor (and now husband) Ryan Dorsey.

Though Dorsey and Rivera now have an 11-month-old baby boy, at the time, she thought it’d be best to not share the pregnancy news with Dorsey and focus on her career. During a day off from filming Glee, she had the pregnancy terminated. In the new issue of People, Rivera opens up about why she chose to finally share the news. “It was very scary to open up about everything. It’s not something a lot of people talk about, but I think they should,” she said. “I know some people might read it and say, ‘What the Hell?’ But I hope someone out there gets something out of it.”
Naya received quite a bit of backlash after the news was made public, but she’s staying strong. She took to Twitter to address her feelings and why she’s unapologetic about her past.

In her memoir, Naya also discusses her struggle with anorexia, which she battled throughout her teens.
“By the time I was a sophomore, I started feeling that what had begun as a game had maybe gone too far. I just avoided food at all costs,” she said in an excerpt. “If my mom had packed a lunch for me, I’d either trash it or find some excuse to give it away.” She continued, “I was so young and it just seemed to be the norm. Everyone was going through similar stuff. I had no way of knowing if I was going through it worse. I was juggling my feelings and it makes me sad that there are girls still going through that 15 years after I went through it.”
Naya’s memoir comes out September 13th, and as described by her publisher, it’s a “warts-and-all account” of her life.
