New York Mayor announces Law & Order Day

The TV hit, created by Emmy Award-winning producer Dick Wolf, follows the lives of a group of police officers and prosecutors as they solve crimes in the Big Apple.

The series is currently in its 20th season and Bloomberg has officially recognised the long-running show for highlighting the city by declaring 23 September Law & Order Day.

Actor Anthony Anderson, who joined the show in 2008 as Detective Kevin Bernard, admits it was a proud day for the cast and crew, and jokes that they should be granted special privileges on Law & Order Day.

He says, “It’s big and I’m not sure what it means for us as a holiday, but since we are all police officers on the show we get free doughnuts for the day across the city every September 23rd. No, no. It’s just a piece of paper.”

The star reveals the cast and crew celebrated the honour with a party earlier this week (23Sep09) – and were joined by former Law & Order stars including Angie Harmon and Benjamin Bratt.

And Anderson can understand why the show has been so successful over the last two decades.

He adds, “There was a load of old cast members there… some I didn’t know. But while I was there, I realised why it’s been so successful for 20 years, it’s because of the love that was there, it was like a family reunion.”
