Like her fellow socialite and best friend, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie attained fame largely through partying alongside as well as co-starring with the blonde heiress on their reality hit show, "The Simple Life. " As the daughter of famed pop singer Lionel Richie, she first enjoyed an opulent lifestyle mainly as the largesse of someone else's fame and money, but she eventually became a quasi-celeb - both in her own right and on her own terms. A favorite of the tabloids, Richie received intense scrutiny after slimming down dramatically in the mid 2000s - a transformation which led to much speculation about how healthy her weight loss actually was. Richie, however, could be quite adept at using the media herself to publicize such things as her fashion lines and her literary endeavors, keeping the public interested in her as a brand and as a person to watch, with her every move generating tabloid headlines.
