Oscar Nominees Given Speech Advice

Academy Awards nominees including Meryl StreepSandra Bullock and George Clooney have been ordered not to cry during their acceptance speech.

The Hollywood stars gathered in Los Angeles for the annual Oscar nominees luncheon in Beverly Hills on Monday, and organizers of the upcoming show took time to give out advice for the potential winners.

Oscars co-producer Bill Mechanic urged the stars to hold back their emotions once they reach the coveted podium, because teary-eyed thank-yous are “the single most-hated thing on the show.”

Co-producer Adam Shankman introduced plans for the winners to give two speeches — a short thanks in front of the audience and a more personal version to cameras backstage, which can then be emailed to friends and family or posted online.

The Academy Awards will take place in L.A. on March 7.
