One of professional football’s most famous voices, sportscaster Pat Summerall, died Tuesday in a Dallas hospital. According to the Dallas Morning News, the Texas sports icon was recovering from surgery for a broken hip at Zale Lipshy Hospital. He was 82 years old.
Summerall, who once played minor league baseball before spending nine years in the NFL, covered 16 Super Bowls in his 40-plus-year broadcasting career, which spanned from 1962 to his semi-retirement in 2003. Summerall continued to announce games sporadically for ESPN and Fox before leaving broadcasting in 2010. Although he was most famous for his football announcing, he also covered the NBA, golf, and tennis tournaments.
John Madden, Summerall’s longtime broadcasting partner, remembers his colleague and friend fondly. “I was so lucky I got to work with Pat,” Madden tells the Dallas Morning News. “He was so easy to work with. He knew how to use words. For a guy like myself who rambles on and on and doesn’t always make sense, he was sent from heaven.”
