Last night, sleazy gossip blogger Perez Hilton posted an alleged ‘upskirt’ photograph to his Twitter account, setting off a vicious circle-jerk of hate across the depths of the Internet; Hilton, true to style, has spent the last 24 hours riding out this cathartic public shaming by claiming, in an extremely roundabout way, that the image was Photoshopped and Miley is almost eighteen, so, you know, get over yourselves.
However, whether the ‘upskirt’ image was real or fake won’t make an ounce of difference if Hilton is charged with child pornography, according to one defense attorney. Posting the image was “suicidal for [Perez],” one lawyer told Salon.com. “We’re not talking about a misdemeanor.” Neither intent nor the veracity of the image will matter if Hilton is indicted, as “under the law, that is still a crime and it is punishable just the same. If you were to take the face of an 8-year-old and put that picture on the nude body of even an identifiable, fully-developed adult porn star, it is child porn punishable identical to if you took a photo of the actual child.”
So basically it’s sad and terrible that we’re even talking about this and Perez Hilton is a publicity-whore and a scumbag, and poor Miley Cyrus, et cetera. In all truth, this depressing postmodern spectacle is only going to boost the popularity of both Hilton and Cyrus. So, you know, cue talking about our culture’s superficiality, or the preponderance of pseudo-events, or the way we marketize teenage sexuality, or how Twitter represents the downfall of the West, or what have you.
