Pete Shelley’s family backs statue campaign

Late punk icon Pete Shelley’s family are backing a bid to erect a statue of the Buzzcocks leader in his native Leigh, England.
The singer died earlier this month (Dec18) after suffering a reported heart attack in his adopted Estonia and now a campaign has been launched to raise funds for a memorial.
Council member Paul Maiden has gathered hundreds of signatures in support of the initiative, telling the Wigan Today newspaper, “We really don’t seem to recognise anyone who does anything of note in the borough. Shelley completed innovated punk music. He added melodies into it, he made the whole genre more melodic.”
“Buzzcocks even shifted more albums than the Sex Pistols. I think it’s time that we thought about celebrating someone who has done something incredible in Leigh.”
Meanwhile, another online petition to get the Buzzcocks’ Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve) hit to number one as a tribute to Shelley, has been signed by over 2,000 people.
