Peter Karrie resigns from university post in arts protest

Celebrated West End theatre star Peter Karrie has resigned his honorary fellowship at a university in his native Wales as part of a protest over reported cuts to arts programs there. The actor/singer has been an honorary fellow at Aberystwyth University for many years, but he has now given up the title amid a dispute over the institute’s arts centre.
Karrie claims two staff members have been wrongfully suspended as university bosses seek to cut costs and reclaim the arts building for academic use.
He says of his resignation, “My reason for such an out-of-character action is to protest at what appears to be your extraordinary determination to ruin one of the finest arts centres in the country. I am unable to support any regime that can treat their staff in such a cruel and appalling manner.”
A spokesperson for the educational institute says, “The university regrets Mr Peter Karrie’s decision to resign his fellowship without having taken the opportunity to discuss his concerns with the university beforehand.”
