Peter Krause ‘threw’ Scorch audition over fears of huge success

Actor Peter Krause purposefully flubbed his audition for 1992 sitcom Scorch after fearing he would forever be known as a dragon puppet’s sidekick if it became a huge success.
The Parenthood star was among the hopefuls to try out for the role of TV weather man Brian Stevens for the 1992 show, but he got cold feet moments before the audition – and it wasn’t because he thought it would flop.
“I did purposefully throw an audition once, where I got nervous the show was gonna be a success,” the 53 year old recalled on U.S. daytime series Strahan & Sara.
“It was about a puppet that was a dragon… and the character (I was up for) was a weather man, and I had to audition with the puppet.
“So the puppeteer and the puppet came before the audition, and I… panicked. I thought, ‘If this is a success like Alf (1980s alien sitcom) or something, and I’m on this for years with his little dragon, I’m terrified.'”
“So I went in and I would jump the cues, I would be late on my cues; I just kinda threw the audition. I took a dive, on purpose,” he shared. “I would have been playing second-fiddle to a dragon!”
Unlike Alf, which ran for four seasons until 1990, Krause dodged a career bullet with Scorch – actor Jonathan Walker went on to nab the role as Stevens, but the show was cancelled by CBS network bosses after just three episodes.
