Biography

Gifted with a seemingly endless amount of creativity and drive, Pharrell Williams embodied a true Renaissance man for the post-grunge era. The Grammy Award-winning producer launched his career with longtime friend Chad Hugo as The Neptunes, churning out songs for emerging hip-hop and R&B artists like Kelis and Clipse. In the early 2000s, Williams and Hugo struck gold with a handful of chart-toppers for Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, which took the former child stars out of the pop mold and into urban funk territory. Williams' slick style of rap-sung collaborations endeared him to the rap community's biggest names, including Jay-Z and Kanye West, while his own genre-mashing musical group N.E.R.D. found success with the alternative and indie crowd. Even while producing work for other artists, Williams maintained his own musical vision with a solo debut album In My Mind (2006) under his and Hugo's own record label, Star Trak. The fashion world also took notice of Williams' mix of street style with high-end wear and anointed him one of the most stylish men in the world, while his collaborations with fashion giant Louis Vuitton and artist Takashi Murakami added to his artist repertoire. In 2010, Williams composed music for the animated feature "Despicable Me," adding another high-water mark for his illustrious body of work and establishing him as a multifaceted entertainer, both center stage and behind-the-scenes. In 2013, Pharrell suddenly became an omnipresent fixture in pop culture after more than a decade as a tastemaker, scoring hit singles and an Academy Award.

Milestones
