Rafael Amaya clears up false drug overdose reports

Actor Rafael Amaya has cleared up recent reports linked to an alleged drug overdose scare, revealing he actually suffered a “nervous breakdown”.
The El Senor del los Cielos star was hospitalised in Mexico City, Mexico in late October (15) after suffering from tachycardia, an abnormally fast heart rate, and rumours suggested he had also been treated for possible drug intoxication.
Amaya hinted at his personal struggles in a Twitter post days after the news surfaced, posting a message in Spanish which roughly translates to, “Coming back from the dead.”
He did not expand on his troubles, but his TV bosses at Spanish-language network Telemundo played down the reports, simply revealing he was “fine” and taking “a well-deserved vacation” after filming his drug drama for 11 months straight.
Now the actor has opened up about his health scare, insisting it had nothing to do with drugs.
“I was in the hospital for two days,” he tells Telemundo news show Al Rojo Vivo. “I had a nervous breakdown due to fatigue and stress. I was working consecutively with no vacation for about 10 months or almost 11 months. Like any other human being, I started to get sick. I started missing work and Telemundo and I decided that we needed a break to recharge my energy. Go spend time with family and forget (about the show) for a little bit and return as new.”
Amaya revealed the false drug rumours and speculation he was in a coma caused his family unnecessary worry, as his health setback wasn’t nearly as serious as some publications suggested.
“I was surprised all of this time because there have been many things said,” he explains. “All of my family has been affected with everything that’s been said. I have been in contact with them, with my friends, with my co-workers… I was only there (in hospital) two days and if I had been in coma, they normally keep you for two or three weeks, up to a month. But no. I remember when I was admitted (to the hospital), when I left and I remember absolutely everything. I was not in coma.”
He adds, “I don’t drink, I don’t take any type of drug or anything.”
Amaya also assured fans he was back in top form, adding, “I am very happy with what is happening in my life, with El Senor de los Cielos, with my life, with my family, with my friends, and I simply needed to take some time to find myself, to return to my origins.
“Right now I feel completely renewed, I feel the same energy that I had when I started El Senor de los Cielos, because I really needed to rest.”
The fourth season of El Senor de los Cielos is set to premiere on the network next year (16).
