Rhett Akins named ACM Songwriter of the Year

Country star Rhett Akins has been named 2018 Academy of Country Music Awards Songwriter of the Year.
The hitmaker, who is Thomas Rhett’s father, was handed the trophy at the Academy of Country Music’s Stories, Songs & Stars event in Las Vegas on Friday night (13Apr18), two days before the prizegiving.
Akins was up against Ashley Gorley, Hillary Lindsey, Shane McAnally, and Josh Osborne for the title.
Akins enjoyed a string of hits as a country singer in the 1990s that included That Ain’t My Truck and Don’t Get Me Started, while he has written tunes for Jason Aldean, Dustin Lynch, and his son.
The ACM Awards ceremony will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Sunday night.
