Biography

One of the most successful rap artists of the 2010s, Rick Ross was also a magnet for controversy that faced numerous legal issues during his tenure in the industry, as well as contempt from some of his fellow artists for concealing his past as a corrections officer. Ross was a familiar if minor figure on the Florida hip-hop scene from the mid-1990s until 2006, when his solo debut single "Hustlin'" minted him as the latest in a long line of tough-talking, luxury-loving MCs who drew inspiration from crime kingpins and other captains of underworld industry. His debut CD, Port of Miami (2006) became his first of four albums to reach the top of the albums chart, but the groundswell of acclaim that followed Ross' rise to the top was sorely tempered by a 2008 revelation that Ross had worked as a Florida corrections officer in the late 1990s. The news immediately cast aspersions on his allegations of a past spent in the drug trade, as well as his viability in a genre so vehemently at odds with law enforcement. To the surprise of many, Ross not only weathered the problem, but also maintained his grip on the rap game. Ross's larger-than-life personality and compelling tales of vice and its rewards helped to make him one of the leading hip-hop performers of the early new millennium.
