When a person becomes a superstar — whether in film, television, or music — they’re going to develop a fan base. Their popularity will be directly proportional with how successful they will become. Now granted, I’ve never been famous, but I have 24 years experience of being a fan to some of Hollywood’s finest, so I know fans are responsible for the majority of an actor or musician’s career success. If a movie comes out and fans don’t go to see it, then it’s considered a flop. If an artist releases a song, but no one buys it in stores or on iTunes, their profits are low. If the public doesn’t like you, then you’re done in the business. Therefore, I think it’s highly important for celebrities to appreciate their fan base and give a little back. Rihanna, however, seems to have a different point of view about the whole “fame” thing: apparently she believes being a role model to fans is not part of her job.
In an interview for the November issue of UK’s Vogue, the singer admits that she has no interest in being a role model to anyone…ever. She confessed to the magazine, “See, people, they want me to be a role model just because of the life I lead. The things I say in my songs, they expect it of me and [being a role model] became more of my job than I wanted it to be. But no, I just want to make music. That’s it. Look, God doesn’t give any more than you can handle. I had to get through a lot of ups and downs – big downs – and a lot of trial and error to get where I am now.” But when you select a career that is displayed in the public eye, then isn’t it your responsibility to become a role model? She has been through a lot and fans are simply trying to acknowledge her many accomplishments in hopes that they can be as strong as she has been. The nerve! If she wants people to leave her alone and not look up to her then why should she reap the benefits that her adoring fans bestow on her? It just doesn’t seem right to me. I’ve never really heard a celebrity complain about being adored too much, but if fans suddenly stop buying her records then perhaps she’ll be singing a different tune.
