As expected Fox’s ‘Machete’ tops the Friday box office derby in a very tight race with Focus Features’ ‘The American’ which put them both at close to $4 million for the day.  ‘Takers,’ ‘The Last Exorcism’ and a lower-than-expected performance by ‘Going the Distance’ in fifth place with $2.2 million for the day lined up behind.  With such a small margin separating the two, ‘The American’ has a shot at taking the weekend away from ‘Machete,’ but we will have to wait and see.

079130H1.jpgFirst Place  – Fox’s ‘Machete‘ starring Danny Trejo and directed by Robert Rodriguez slashes its way to first place with about $3.87 million.

Second Place – Focus Features’ ‘The American‘ lands in second in the mid-$3 million range, but could have a strong Saturday and Sunday performance that could ultimately put it ahead of ‘Machete.’

Third Place – Sony’s ‘Takers‘ takes third for Friday with a gross of $3 million and a cumulative gross that is on the verge of $30 million.

Fourth and Fifth Place belong to Lionsgate’s ‘The Last Exorcism‘ and Warner Bros.’ ‘Going the Distance‘ each with just over $2 million for the Friday Rally.
