Ryan Murphy adapting The Prom musical for TV movie

TV mogul Ryan Murphy is set to revamp Broadway musical The Prom for a new Netflix movie.
The show, which opened on the Great White Way in November (18), focuses on four struggling theatre actors who travel to Indiana to help out a teenager whose prom is cancelled after she tries to bring her girlfriend as her date.
Indiana native Murphy, the co-creator of TV hits like Glee and American Horror Story, reveals he related to the comedy because as an openly-gay teen, he was also banned from taking his same-sex partner to his school dance – and that’s what drew him to the project.
“The Prom is one of the most uplifting, heartfelt and special musicals I have ever seen on Broadway,” he wrote on Instagram. “It’s truly an original that celebrates the underdog and says in a loving spectacular way that LGBTQ rights are human rights.
“I feel a special connection to it because it’s set in Indiana, and that’s where I grew up, too.”
Murphy will adapt The Prom for the small screen alongside the stage production’s producers Bill Damaschke and Dori Bernstein, director Casey Nicholaw, songwriter Matthew Sklar, and book writers Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin, reports TV Line.
The film is expected to premiere in September, 2020.
