Throwing a dinner party for the President of the United States can’t be an easy feat, but it’s one that Sarah Jessica Parker managed to pull off with no problem. The actress opened up her New York City home on Thursday evening to a handful of celebrity guests to help raise money for President Barack Obama‘s campaign for re-election. Even the President and First Lady Michelle Obama made a special, rare appearance for the night’s event.
But since this isn’t just your every day dinner party with friends, Hollywood.com has put together a rundown of some of the best highlights of the night, according to US Weekly. And if anyone knows how to throw a great NYC shindig, it’s Carrie Bradshaw.
1. Celebrity Attendees: Anna Wintour Meets Miranda Priestly
Among the celebrities on hand at the soiree included Oscar winner Meryl Streep, fashion designer Michael Kors, Bravo’s Andy Cohen, and Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, who moderated a private question-and-answer session between the president and the guests.
2. Tickets To the Event Cost $40,000/Person
I know these celebrity events can be expensive, but $40,000 is more than I make in…well…ever. And here I thought Olive Garden’s meals were overpriced. Yowza!
3. The Event Raised $2 Million Dollars
With a total of 50 guests paying $40K a head and millions of participants in online sweepstakes, the event was able to raise a whopping $2 million dollars for the Obama Victory Fund. It doesn’t beat George Clooney’s nearly $15 million dollar fundraiser from last month, but it’s still nothing to scoff at. Yes We Can!
4. Matthew Broderick Was MIA
While you’d assume to find the actor somewhere in his own house, apparently the Hollywood star was nowhere to be found. When asked about it, Obama said that Broderick had a show to run off to since he’s currently starring in Broadway’s Nice Work If You Can Get It production. Either that or he just couldn’t afford the 40 grand (which would be completely understandable).
5. Obama Jokes About Michelle’s Popularity
During the evening, Obama stood up to give a speech about his thoughts on the re-election and how they’re going to have to work harder than ever to win. But he also had some lighthearted moments where he joked about his wife’s popularity among most celebs. He chided that, “most of you are here to see Michelle. I always explain I rank fifth in the hierarchy in the White House: There’s Michelle, my mother-in-law, the two girls and Bo. So that actually makes it six. In terms of star wattage, people come to the White House and say, ‘Where’s Michelle?'”
6. Parker’s 9-Year-Old Son Is Adorable
When Barack later mentioned that GM is “back on top,” Parker and Broderick’s 9-year-old son, James Wilkie, started clapping, impromptu. “That’s worth applauding,” Barack grinned as the guests laughed and joined in. “Right on cue.” Leave it to a kid to make even a stuffy political fundraiser a worthwhile event.
