Shutter Island tops U.S. box office chart for second week

The new movie, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a U.S. marshal investigating the disappearance of a patient at a prison for the criminally insane, has scored another $22.2 million (£13.9 million), taking its 10-day total to $75.1 million (£46.9 million).

Bruce Willis’ police comedy Cop Out debuts at number two with an impressive $18.6 million (£11.63 million) and horror film The Crazies, a remake of George Romero’s 1973 movie, is another new entry at three after taking $16.5 million (£10.31 million).

Director James Cameron’s sci-fi epic Avatar continues to make headlines – the film is in fourth place with earnings of $14 million (£8.75 million), taking its total domestic haul to a whopping $706.9 million (£441.8 million), more than two months after its release.

Pierce Brosnan’s Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief rounds out the new box office chart top five.
