Streetdance walks over Prince of Persia at U.K. box office

The film, which features several acts from Simon Cowell’s Britain’s Got Talent TV show, including George Sampson and Diversity, tells the story of a London dance troupe who team up with ballet students for a competition.

The feel-good film easily beat Jake Gyllenhaal’s big budget action movie over the weekend (22-23May10) to land the top spot in Britain’s box office chart, taking $3.74 million (£2.49 million).

James Richardson, producer and co-owner of Vertigo Films, the company behind the dance film, says, “The success of StreetDance 3D has far exceeded our expectations. The fact that an independent British film has beaten the U.S. heavyweights just shows how well Streetdance 3D has connected with audiences across the country.”
