What if we told you it’s easy being green? It’s amazing to see celebrities use their time to make the world a better place, ranging from eco-conscious clothing lines, sustainable beauty brands, and social activism. This week, we’re focusing on the entertainment industry’s “it girl” Billie Eilish.

Since her early steps in the spotlight, the Happier Than Ever singer has been vocal about her efforts to be environmentally conscious and encourage her fans to live sustainable lives too.

One way that Billie Eilish chooses sustainability in her everyday life is by following a vegan diet. In an interview with British Vogue, Billie said that she’s been vegan for 7 years and shared her reasons for not eating animal products:

I learned about the dairy industry and the meat industry, which I already knew about, but… You know, once you know that kind of thing and you see it, it’s really hard to go back. And now, even though I have lots of friends who eat dairy and meat and I don’t ever want to tell anybody what to do, I just can’t go on in my life knowing what’s going on in the animal world and like not doing anything about it.

Billie Eilish has publicly supported vegan restaurants in the Los Angeles area including My Vegan and Plant Food For People.

According to Global Citizen, following a plant-based diet can conserve water, clean soil, reduce energy consumption, and purify the air. Whether you eat vegan dishes sometimes or live a vegan lifestyle like Billie Eilish, it is a small way that we can help make an impact in the efforts toward sustainability!

Billie Eilish encourages her fans to make sustainable choices in her art

In her music video for “all the good girls go to hell,” Billie Eilish embodies a creature trying to escape an oil spill, surrounded by wildfires. The way that Billie’s character is nearly destroyed in the music video represents nature’s fate if we continue to disrespect our planet.

Billie Eilish released the music video ahead of the 2019 Global Climate Strike. She shared a message along with the music video encouraging viewers to take action:

Right now there are millions of people all over the world begging our leaders to pay attention. Our earth is warming up at an unprecedented rate, icecaps are melting, our oceans are rising, our wildlife is being poisoned and our forests are burning. On September 23rd, the UN will host the 2019 Climate Action Summit to discuss how to tackle these issues. The clock is ticking. On Friday September 20th and Friday September 27th you can make your voice be heard. Take it to the streets.”

Billie Eilish has taken other opportunities to share commentary on climate change with her fans, as well. In a video with Nike, Billie spoke with climate expert Dr. Ayana Elizabeth on how everyone can make an impact in the fight against climate change. During the discussion, the pair talked about how little changes can make a big impact and that everyone has to start somewhere.

In a video she shared to her YouTube channel in 2019 titled “Our House Is On Fire,” Billie Eilish spoke with actor Woody Harrelson about the climate emergency plaguing our planet. Billie said, “We cannot let this happen on our watch. Up to 1 million species are becoming extinct because of mankind’s actions and time is running out.” Check out the full video:

Sustainability on Billie’s “Where Do We Go?” Tour

In March 2020, Billie Eilish embarked on her “Where Do We Go?” World Tour, the second tour for her Grammy-winning album When we All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? Unfortunately, the tour was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to the shutdowns, Billie Eilish made sure that her tour would be as environmentally friendly as possible.

In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Billie Eilish spoke about how she partnered with REVERB, a nonprofit organization that combines live music with environmental change. Billie told Jimmy that her tour would eliminate plastic straws, fans could bring reusable water bottles, there would be recycling bins available, and they would be serving plant-based food.

Billie Eilish also partnered with Global Citizen to give fans who take action against climate change a chance to win tickets to her tour!

It’s amazing to see celebrities making environmentally conscious choices in their busy lives and careers. Thank you, Billie Eilish for always being vocal about your sustainability lifestyle and encouraging your fans to do the same!
