Biography

Through the first decade of his career, the Welsh-born Tom Ellis amassed a diverse and impressive list of acting credits, though his biggest roles were in British comedies and soap operas. His earliest parts included "The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby," which was based on the Charles Dickens novel and saw release on the small screen in 2001. That same year, he appeared in the subversive comedy "Buffalo Soldiers," which featured an all-star cast that included Joaquin Phoenix, Anna Paquin, and Ed Harris. Guest-starring roles on television followed, including a four-episode stint on the dramatic series "No Angels" from 2005 to 2006. Around the same time, Ellis was cast in his most visible role yet: Dr. Oliver Cousins, a well-meaning general practitioner in the soap "EastEnders." During the latter part of the '00s, he guest-starred in an episode of the sci-fi show "Dr. Who," and co-starred in television comedies such as "Monday Monday" and "Miranda," playing the potential love interest of star Miranda Hart in the latter. He has appeared in several films, including Mike Leigh's 2004 drama "Vera Drake" starring Imelda Staunton, and the '08 comedy "Miss Conception" starring Heather Graham. Since 2010, Ellis has worked consistently in British television.

.

"You know, a lot of actors would tell you that they'd rather play the villain than the hero. When you're the character, there are no repercussions. So there is a kind of liberating feeling about saying certain things to certain people – and I think that it's always quite satisfying to do that." - from People, Feb. 29, 2016

.

"I've worked a lot in comedy. As much as I love playing dramatic roles, it's always nice to be able to have some humor around when working." - from Empire Magazine, April 11, 2016
