After conquering screens both large and small (remember him on Family Ties?), Tom Hanks is going to give acting without any screen at all a chance. He’s signed to make his Broadway debut in a new play by screenwriter Nora Ephron.
Hanks will play Mike McAlary, a New York Daily News columnist who covered corruption scandals in New York in the ’80s and ’90s before dying of colon cancer at the age of 41. Looks like Ephron (a former journalist) is gunning for a Pulitzer by writing a play about a Pulitzer prize winner. This is quite a change of pace for Hanks and Ephron, who collaborated previously on Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail. We’re not sure how many jokes can be wriggled out of a play about journalism, corruption, and cancer, but these two can probably find at least a few moments of levity. What’s going to be even harder is making Hanks, who is 56, look 15 years younger. If the camera adds 10 pounds, maybe the stage takes away 10 years?
Anyway, the play starts rehearsals in January 2013 and will open a few months later. Get your tickets now. It should be a Big event.
